PMC Southern Africa at 5 years! By Patrick Keifert

Chance encounters that later appear the work of the Holy Spirit leave me filled with wonder and gratitude. Take for instance a chance encounter at the Center for Theological Inquiry in 2000. My dear friend of blessed memory, Donald Juel, was taking a leave of absence from his teaching New Testament at Princeton, to work on his continuing project of messianic exegesis, the origins of messianic expectations in the various forms of Palestinian Jewish religion before the life and work of Jesus, our Lord and how they help us understand the New Testament record. He and I were working on a ten year project on the Bible and Theological Education funded by the Lilly Endowment through CTI. I was visiting him for our continuing work and he introduced me to Coenie Burger, a member of the faculty at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Donald, in his usual unassuming but gleeful way suggested Coenie and I might have some things in common. So, while Donald did some other work on our project, Coenie and I sat in Don's office and talked.

CROSSING THE BAR - XVI
An Unnecessary God
By Jim Johnson

SOURCE: http://www.churchinnovations.org/05_news/pii_v8_i1/pii_v8_i1_johnson.html

In Easter we find a God who won’t share the throne of control. In Easter, God alone is God, doing what God alone can do, and that seems to be uncomfortable for both the churched and the un-churched alike.

I heard a story the other day about a fellow who wanted to build a bar on property that was too close, to their liking, to one of the local churches (though if the truth be told, they didn’t want a bar built anywhere at all). Their reasoning – and the reason given for their fervent opposition – was because of the perceived “negative moral impact” on the community as a whole and especially on “the children.” So, when the bar owner had announced his plans, the church railed against such an ungodly endeavor.

Responding to the need for a new vision of evangelism for small towns and rural areas, Kevin Ruffcorn presents lively suggestions and new understandings gleaned from his workshops on rural evangelism and his own experience. He emphasizes that the vision of evangelism held by those in suburbia and other well-populated neighborhoods usually does not fit rural settings. The author looks at the possibilities and the problems typical of less densely populated areas, reviewing some concerns many of them experience: Small memberships, frequent turnover of pastors, decreasing population of surrounding communities and the challenge of facilitating needed changes.
