Skillful Shepherds – Explorations in Pastoral Theology

Derek Tidball
Apollos. 2003

Good, solid, contemporary introductions to patristic authors and writings are difficult to find in the English-speaking world, and European volumes are expensive. This volume, which is Siegfried Schatzmann’s translation of Lehrbuch der Patrologie, offers English-speaking readers easy access to Hubertus R. Drobner’s traditional introduction to early Christian thought.
Hubertus R. Drobner brings patristics scholarship up to date in this traditional introduction. His work is sufficiently broad to be a useful summary of early Christian history and the expansive strokes of doctrinal debate and development and provides a clear presentation of early Christian thought.
Drobner introduces new materials throughout this recently updated edition of his handbook. A general map and several timetables add to the clarity of the volume.
The Fathers of the Church is valuable in its presentation of contemporary studies and views. Patristics students will benefit from this dependable overview of early Christian texts, and scholars and libraries will appreciate the extensive bibliography, indexes, and other resources.

Reviews
“This is an English translation by Siegfried Schatzmann of the German book Lehrbuch der Patrologie by Hubertus R. Drobner, which was originally published in 1994 with some corrected, revised and additional material added by Drobner and William Harmless, S.J. This book is an introduction and bibliography of the writings of the Fathers of the Church and other early Christian writings. The Fathers and other writers are grouped into historical periods. Each Church Father or writing starts with an introduction into that person or writing, which is then followed by a bibliography of sources in various languages. There are books, journals, and Internet sites provided. There is a supplemental bibliography at the back of the book with a subject index and an index of ancient sources. This book is highly recommended for seminaries and schools of theology due to its price and the amount of information it provides.”

—Review of Biblical Literature
“Drobner’s volume is a translation of the 1994 German book, but with additions from subsequent translations in French, etc. Rather than a textbook, it is a rich resource book or “guidebook,” as English editor Harmless labels it. The book is chronologically organized. Within separate historical periods, readers will find focuses on themes, particular church fathers, and the fathers’ various texts. Each focus offers a wealth of bibliographical material. Thankfully, Harmless supplements Drobner’s bibliographical resources with some more current entries. Readers will discover classical research resources, i.e., from the entire 20th century, but not the latest, most up-to-date material. Overall, this is an easy-to-use ready reference for students and scholars alike. Drobner (Univ. of Paderborn, Germany) also provides an effective overview of the salient themes of the early Christian centuries. He offers good, very readable introductions to the various church fathers with respect to their historical context and theological significance. Useful indexes of subjects and of ancient sources again enable quick access for readers with particular research interests. Finally, one of the book’s most distinctive features is the chapter on independent bodies of literature, which offers resources on Syrians, Egyptians, Armenians, and Arabs. This will be an important work for serious students and scholars of early Christianity. Its reasonable price and its comprehensiveness within a single volume mean that it will be valuable in a wide variety of libraries. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students and above.”

“I can highly recommend this book to both teachers and students in schools of theology and seminaries due to its comparatively moderate price and the amount of information provided in just 600 pages. It is certainly more than the mere introduction suggested by its English title. . . I am convinced that this volume will become the normative contemporary source to be first consulted by those seeking further information about the Fathers.”

Creation and Last Things

creation and last thingsby Gregory Cootsona

Geneva Press
 $19.95

‘n Goeie boek!

The goal of the Foundations of Christian Faith series is to enable readers to learn about theology in ways that are clear, enjoyable, and meaningful. Each volume examines the doctrines of the Christian faith and stimulates readers not only to think more deeply about their faith but also to lead them to understand their faith in relationship to contemporary challenges and questions. Individuals and study groups alike will find these guides invaluable in their search for depth and integrity in their Christian faith. In this well-written and concise volume, Greg Cootsona explores the doctrines of creation and eschatology (the end of days) in light of contemporary science. The author addresses what the relationship is between the creation in the beginning and the new creation at the end of time, how the doctrine of creation informs our lives as Christians, and how we grow in faith and love in light of these doctrines. The Reading and Preaching of the Scriptures

Written by Admin on . Posted in Boeke, Dienste-Communitas, Prediking

Tog is ek baie dankbaar vir Old se reeks.

This sixth volume of Hughes Oliphant Old’s monumental, acclaimed study of preaching throughout history, The Modern Age, tells the story of preaching and worship from the French Revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall (1789–1989). During this period preaching continued to support the historic Christian faith while the church undertook to resist secularization, come to grips with biblical criticism, and initiate bold overseas missions.
Opening with the revived Catholic Order of Preachers, continental Protestants such as Abraham Kuyper, and the self-consciously modern preaching of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Old moves on to consider Victorian figures such as John Henry Newman and Charles Haddon Spurgeon. He carefully lays out the tensions between Old and New School Calvinism as well as the beginnings of black preaching and the great American tradition of Charles Finney, Dwight L. Moody, Harry Emerson Fosdick, and many more. In the twentieth century Old’s focus falls on the crises of the two world wars, especially the courageous ministries of German, Dutch, and Hungarian preachers during the Third Reich. An Architecture of Immanence: Architecture for Worship and Ministry Today

Mark A. Torgerson

Eerdmans. 2007

$24.00 Paperback

ISBN: 978-0-8028-3209-2

Hy eindig met twee opsommende hoofstukke: “Where are we now?” (oor wat ons tot hier toe geleer het) en “Where can we go?” (rigtings vir die toekoms).

In this book Mark Torgerson shows how modern architecture has heavily influenced the construction of new sacred spaces, producing a new way of building that emphasizes God’s coming near to us.

Torgerson begins by discussing God’s transcendence and immanence and showing how church architecture has traditionally interpreted these key concepts. He then traces the theological roots of immanence’s priority from liberal theology and liturgical innovation to modern architecture. Next, Torgerson illustrates this new architecture of immanence through particular practitioners, focusing especially on the work of theologically savvy architect Edward Anders Sövik. Finally, he addresses the future of church architecture as congregations are buffeted by the twin forces of liturgical change and postmodernism.

An Architecture of Immanence will interest architects, liturgists, and all Christians who seek to read the sacred spaces of the recent past. (Eerdmans website)

First Theology: God, Scripture & Hermeneutics

Written by Admin on . Posted in Boeke, Dienste-Communitas, Dogmatiek

“This is a book on theological hermeneutics. It is a plea for being hermeneutical about theology and for being theological about hermeneutics. It is an argument for treating the questions of God, Scripture and hermeneutics as one problem. This one problem defines what I call ‘first theology.’ ” (from the Preface)

In thirteen chapters, Kevin Vanhoozer explores various dimensions of doing first theology and illuminates not only how we can talk about God but how we can begin with the Word of God and act on the basis of that Word. Blazing a pathway for recovering the unity of biblical studies and theological reflection, he addresses the challenges presented by the contemporary so-called postmodern situation, especially deconstructionism. Not only does a way of doing God-centered biblical interpretation come to light through Vanhoozer’s explorations, but the triune identity of a God who is communicative, loving and sovereign also comes into focus.

This is a book for students, pastors and teachers who have an interest in the character of God, the nature of Scripture, Christian theology, our approach to hermeneutics and how they are all necessarily interrelated to the glory of God.
