Kyk gerus hier daarna: https://youtu.be/y9jW_IHzJko

The Reading and Preaching of the Scriptures

Written by Admin on . Posted in Boeke, Dienste-Communitas, Prediking

Tog is ek baie dankbaar vir Old se reeks.

This sixth volume of Hughes Oliphant Old’s monumental, acclaimed study of preaching throughout history, The Modern Age, tells the story of preaching and worship from the French Revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall (1789–1989). During this period preaching continued to support the historic Christian faith while the church undertook to resist secularization, come to grips with biblical criticism, and initiate bold overseas missions.
Opening with the revived Catholic Order of Preachers, continental Protestants such as Abraham Kuyper, and the self-consciously modern preaching of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Old moves on to consider Victorian figures such as John Henry Newman and Charles Haddon Spurgeon. He carefully lays out the tensions between Old and New School Calvinism as well as the beginnings of black preaching and the great American tradition of Charles Finney, Dwight L. Moody, Harry Emerson Fosdick, and many more. In the twentieth century Old’s focus falls on the crises of the two world wars, especially the courageous ministries of German, Dutch, and Hungarian preachers during the Third Reich. Churchly Joy: Orthodox Devotions for the Church Year

churchly joy By Sergius Bulgakov, Boris Jakim (translator)
Eerdmans 2008
$16.00 Paperback
ISBN: 978-0-8028-4834-5

“There are two worlds for the Christian and two lives in them: one of these lives belongs to this world of sorrow and suffering, while the other is lived in a hidden manner in the Kingdom of God, in the joyful city of heaven. All of the events, both of the Gospel and of the Church, which are celebrated at different times of the Church Year are not only remembered but are also accomplished in us, insofar as our souls touch this heavenly world. These events become for us a higher reality, a source of unceasing celebration, of perfect joy.”
— Sergius Bulgakov (from preface)
This distinctive book contains spiritual orations and edifying discourses rooted in the Orthodox tradition. In Churchly Joy Sergius Bulgakov takes readers through the joyous mysteries of the church year as reflected in the Orthodox Church’s major feasts, including celebrations of the Annunciation, the Birth of Christ, the Epiphany, the Transfiguration, the Triumphal Entry, Easter, and more. Churchly Joy reflects Bulgakov’s transcendent vision for the church and will provide spiritual growth and edification for all Christians. (Eerdmans Website)

Claiming Theology in the Pulpit

Claiming Theology in the PulpitWJK: 2003
Burton Cooper & John S McClure
ISBN-13: 9780664227029
$24.95

Encapsulating years of experience integrating critical theological thinking with the preaching task, Claiming Theology in the Pulpit will be a welcomed resource to both preachers and students. Through the use of a theological profile, Cooper and McClure help preachers become more aware of not only the broad theological traditions of the church but of their own particular theological appropriations. Part I of the book lays out the eight categories of the theological profile, offering a worksheet for readers to identify in summary fashion their own theological position. Part II suggests specific ways that preachers can use the profile as a tool to become more theologically intentional in their preaching.

Coenie Burger resenseer:

The Witness of Preaching

the witness of preachingThomas G. Long

WJK.  2005
ISBN-13: 9780664229436

Thomas G. Long’s The Witness of Preaching has become the standard text in preaching classes. In this revision, Long has expanded the key chapter on biblical exegesis, incorporating many additional examples of textual interpretation, and has included more examples of sermon forms, illustrations, and conclusions. He critically engages the best thinkers, bringing into the conversation both important new voices and the latest work of those who appeared in the first edition. In addition, he addresses some of the new forces at work, such as the use of video clips and PowerPoint in sermons.” As in the first edition, Long allows the theological image of bearing witness to the gospel to govern and organize every aspect of the process of creating a sermon – from the interpretation of a biblical text to the oral delivery of the sermon. Long’s wisdom and advice will be of continuing value to both seminary students and the veteran preacher.

The Joy of Ministry

the joy of ministryWestminister John Knox. 01/2008
Thomas W. Currie III

ISBN-13: 9780664231095
$16.95

Clergy burnout still abounds. Now comes an antidote: a collection of reflections centering on a lost note today, “joy” in ministry. The Joy of Ministry contains eight theological reflections on ministry to help pastors recognize their identities and the joy in the midst of their ministry of sharing the gospel. Rooted in the writings of Karl Barth and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Thomas Currie reminds readers of the basis for the church’s ministry in what God has done in Jesus Christ and ways the gospel joy is expressed in ministry in the church.

“I profited greatly from Tom Currie’s wonderfully theological perspective on an often-neglected aspect of Christian discipleship.”
—William Willimon, Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church
