The Overberg Pilgrimage of Hope (Overberg Pelgrimstog van Hoop) is a complete guide for individuals and groups who would like to do this Pilgrimage. It was written by Adrienne Bester and Frederick Marais who formed part of the very first group on this walk. This is the second edition and Pilgrimwalkers can either walk from Robertson to Agulhas or Stellenbosch to Agulhas. Pilgrims can also opt for shorter sections.
The route takes you to some of the most beautiful areas of our country – like Greyton, Genadendal, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay and Baardskeerdersbos. The route also follows the history of the country by running past old missionary stations such as Genadendal and Elim with their extraordinary stories and beautiful architecture.
The guide explains why people undertake pilgrimages and how these can be practised as a spiritual discipline. It offers detailed information about preparation for a pilgrimage, how to obtain permits and the costs involved. It also contains a section about spiritual disciplines that can be practised on the route. This is followed by a day-to-day route description with GPS markers that are compatible with Google Maps. Useful information on the villages and the availability of shops and pharmacies along the way, and the contact details of overnight lodges and places to eat have been included. This guide therefore allows groups to easily plan their own Overberg Pilgrimage of Hope.
