“I think it was a bold and courageous step of FW de Klerk in the light of the white community’s feeling to announce what he announced yesterday” (Naudé:1999). “We have a special responsibility in that sense of our reformed background, which other churches don’t have. And if we don’t accept that, and if we don’t see that as a challenge and respond to it, then our witness …as Christians and as a church and as a congregation will be seriously questioned.”(Naudé:1999). Beyers’ Reformed background focused on the socio-ethical dimensions of life: Justice is a key goal of the church. “The people who need to be liberated in this country in the real deeper sense of the word are the whites and not the blacks” (Naudé:1999). Beyers was an Afrikaner prophet who start his calling as minister in the NG Church and ended his calling in the NG Church.
This paper consists of three sections. Firstly, a transcribed section of FW de Klerk’s opening address to parliament, on 2 February 1990. Secondly, a transcribed presentation of my interview with Dr. Beyers Naudé in his study room on 3 February 1990. Lastly, I focused on his Reformed background and prophetic witness against injustice.
