Why are we committed to transformation?

H. Richard Niebuhr: The Responsible self, helps us to investigate, to unpack  our motives

Three metaphors for self-understanding
Man-the-maker

Homo faber
Goal seeking
Idealistic
Self-realization
Rejects material which does not fit his/her purpose
Telos-logic
Success morality
We are all our working on selves- our own selves or our companions- technicians, artisans, craftsmen, artists.

Man-the-citizen
Homo politicus
Living under laws
Politics as the art of what is possible
Obedience as the highest form of live

Man-the-answerer
Homo dialogicus
Key question: what is fitting, what is a fitting response?
Responsibility:
To interpret to understand what is going on
Accountability, to stay with your actions
    Social solidarity

Responsibility affirms- God is acting in all actions upon you. So respond to all actions upon you as to respond to his actions
